Developments in the “Bali suitcase killing” case just keep getting weirder and more dubious. Seems like the lawyer of Heather Mack, the daughter of the murdered victim, has spun a new thread to shift the culpability over to Mack’s boyfriend and away from a “premeditated” charge.
Mack’s lawyer, Raja Nasution, alleges that Mack was acting like a “robot” when she shoved her mother’s body into a suitcase. Nasution says Mack was not present for her mother, Chicago socialite Sheila von Wiese-Mack’s murder. She says she didn’t witness it and hid in the bathroom of the room at the St. Regis in Bali where von Wiese-Mack was staying once her boyfriend struck her mother, according to a report published by the Sydney Morning Herald.
Sources reported that Mack’s boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, confessed to committing the murder, saying it was the use of the n-word that triggered him in the heat of the moment.
Mack is currently pregnant with Schaefer’s baby, a factor that we shouldn’t let go unnoticed when looking at this case. According to her lawyer, “She was torn between her own mother and the father of her baby,” as quoted by the SMH.
If Schaefer and Mack are eventually charged with premeditated murder, the couple could receive a life sentence or the death penalty. What really happened that day in room 317 at the St. Regis can only fully be known by Mack and Schaefer, but it sure makes sense why they’d want to include elements of “heat of the moment” and acting like a “robot” to avoid sounding like they planned the murder in advance.
