Wicked Tuna Bali edition: Rare white bluefin tuna airlifted from Bali

“Oh my god Karen, you can’t just ask [fish] why they’re white.”

A bluefin tuna picked up in Bali on Friday was looking more like a whitefin than anything else.

Think airlifts from Bali are just for med evacs? Nope. The 118 kilogram white bluefin tuna was airlifted from Bali to Tokyo’s famous Tsukiji fish market, the largest wholesale fish and seafood market in the world, reports the Japan News

Sold for ¥1,500 per kilogram (roughly IDR1.5 million) in auction, the novelty fish didn’t earn much more for its pasty looks, but was rather in line with the average going rate (which is still quite a lot).

“I’ve never seen such a tuna,” a longtime wholesaler reportedly said, who postulated the white skin could be from a lack of pigmentation.

“The [tuna’s] meat is stable red and the quality is good,” said an official at wholesaler Yamawa, the successful bidder, according the Japan News.

The whole tuna was reportedly be put on display at a fish restaurant in central Tokyo.
