Alleged Canggu public urination and glassing could land Aussie bros 4 years in Bali prison

After allegedly drunkenly peeing on public property then glassing a local restaurant owner when confronted, two Australian brothers could get four years of prison in Bali.

Western Australian brothers Tim and Scott O’Hehir from Perth were spotted urinating on the property of Apa Kabar Restaurant owner Wayan Mudipa on Friday night in Canggu, reports say. When Mudipa confronted the two, he allegedly got attacked by the brothers, reports Merdeka.

The details of what actually went down once the brothers responded to Mudipa calling them out are a bit murky and involve a lot of allegations and a ton of  “he said, she said, police said.” We will keep you updated as police and media continue to release developments, but here is what we know so far:

Mudipa had shouted out “Hey, what are you fucking doing here?” to them when he saw the brothers peeing on his property, reports news.com.AU.

And they weren’t just peeing in an alleyway. One of the worst parts is that Scott, 32, was urinating on Mudipa’s sanggah, the place for praying in Balinese houses, reports Tribun Bali. While at least not on a temple, younger brother Tim 27, was reportedly peeing inside a nearby shop owned by Mudipa, which is currently under renovation, according to news.com.AU.

Mudipa alleges that Tim struck him with his hand and grabbed his neck, while just moments later Scott smashed a beer bottle into his forehead, reports news.com.AU. This attack allegedly injured Mudipa’s hands, face, and head.

Apparently the brothers tried to run away, but local Balinese people caught Tim and took him to the North Kuta Police station for questioning, whereas Scott reportedly eventually turned himself in.

Police reportedly confirmed the brothers were inebriated, but claim Scott denied striking Mudipa. However, authorities say Scott admitted he saw Tim hit Mudipa with his hand, and police say Tim confirmed that fact.

“It is their confession. But the victim and several witnesses said that they hit the victim by bottle,” North Kuta Police Chief Ronny Riantoko Eppang said, as quoted by news.com.AU.

Apparently if Mudipa withdraws claims against the pair, police have said they could go free. If not, however, they could face a maximum penalty of four years prison for charges under article 351 on persecution (maltreatment) in Indonesian law, according to Perth Now

Scott said they were “very sorry,” when asked to say something to his family after leaving the interrogation room and reportedly agreed to pay for Mudipa’s medical care, along with offering a compensation payment to him, reports Perth Now.

The O’Hehir brothers are said to be one week into a three week vacation in Bali.

We can only wait to hear if Mudipa will drop the case (but if he really got glassed and his sanggah got peed on, then how likely is that?) or if these brothers will rot in Kerobokan for the next four years or so.

Nonetheless, this story has Australians across Bali cringing, saying, “Oh God, we’re not all like this, how humiliating.”
