The Hail Mary Play: Bali 9 death row inmates have one last hope to avoid firing squad

When Indonesian President Jokowi announced in December that exercising the death penalty, especially for drug cases, is important “shock therapy,” it seemed like the two Bali Nine death row inmates were as good as shot.

However, in a “hail Mary” attempt to escape the firing squade, Kerobokan Prison’s Bali Nine inmates Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran will try to submit one last appeal thanks to a 2013 Supreme Court ruling that allows more than one final appeal to be submitted, reports the Australian

“We are at the moment preparing the second case for judicial review,’’ their Indonesian lawyer Todong Mulya Lubis said yesterday, as quoted by the Australian.

“When we will file, we will have to decide later. We are not certain yet. We will have to be in touch with Myuran and Andrew and their Australian lawyers.

‘’We believe we have a right to a second review. We are using every possible legal avenue.’’

Chan and Sukumaran had been holding out for clemency from Jokowi’s predecessor, Susilo Bamgang Yudhoyono for more than two years, but SBY finished his presidency without giving any pardon to them.

The infamous Bali Nine is a group of nine Australians arrested in April 2005 for attempting to smuggle 8.3 kilograms of heroin out of Bali.
