Bali 9 Sukumaran and Chan to be executed together

Reports are saying Bali Nine death row inmate Myuran Sukumaran has to wait for just one last thing before his execution: for fellow Bali Niner Andrew Chan.

Indonesia’s Attorney General H.M. Prasetyo says the two Kerobokan Prison inmates will be executed together, reports the Australian Associated Press

Even though the rejection of Sukumaran’s plea for clemency was already made official by a letter from President Joko Widodo and Chan has yet to receive such letter, Prasetyo said on Thursday that once Chan receives such rejection letter, that’s it for both of them.

“When a crime is committed by more than one person, the execution must be conducted at the same time,” Prasetyo said, as quoted by the AAP.

“So Myuran will wait for his turn.”

Sukumaran and Chan were convicted in 2006 for a 2005 trafficking attempt to smuggle 8.3 kilograms of heroin out of Bali.

Prasetyo said earlier this week that even though Chan hasn’t had his plea formally rejected yet, his name is on a list of 20 death row inmates who are up to face the firing squad this year, as a part of Jokowi’s “firm” resoluteness against drug trafficking

The AAP is also reporting that six drug convicts (not Sukumaran and Chan) will face the firing squad on Sunday. Out of those six, four are foreigners.
