Family still desperately searching for Fernando Campello ‘without much help’

The 24-year-old Brazilian national who went missing in Gili Trawangan last Friday has still not been located to the dismay of his family members.

Fernando Campello, an Australian resident, had been backpacking through Southeast Asia with a stop in Gili T, a small island off the coast of Lombok. After having a drink and falling sick then acting paranoid, he reportedly wandered off Friday evening and has not been seen or heard from since.

A corpse turned up off the coast of Lombok on Tuesday, but Campello’s mother, Luciana Vieira denies it’s her son.

“He is still alive. The body had been in the water for weeks and he has only been missing for days. There were no tattoos on the body so I know it was not him,” she said, as quoted by news.com.AU.

It is apparent from pictures circulating of her son that he did have tattoos (see photo at the top).

As an Australian resident, she reportedly sought help from the Australian embassy, but syas officials have declined to help since her son was traveling with a Brazilian passport.

“I am really scared because I do not trust the police here,” she said. “I want an Australian doctor or a Brazilian doctor to come with me while I do it.”

Apparently police are helping her, but not sufficiently. Vieria says she’s been all over the island on bike looking for clues (and it’s not that big of an island). She says locals won’t search caves on the island because of “evil spirits.”

A women identifying herself as Campello’s cousin posted to the Bali Expats Facebook page earlier today begging the expat community for help and saying that the Indonesian, Brazilian, and Australian governments have refused to help:

We sure hope Campello turns up soon and are waiting for more information about that body that turned up in Lombok two days ago. If it isn’t Campello, then who is it? We will continue to update you as the story develops.
