Over capacity at Kerobokan, Bali governor proposes a move

The “Hotel K” aka Bali’s most infamous penitentiary, Kerobokan Prison, is seriously overbooked, so the island’s governor is looking for a long term solution.

Kerobokan has been home to some of the most famous prisoners in Bali, such as Schapelle Corby, the Bali suitcase murder couple, and of course, Bali Nine Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran.

It’s hard to imagine the island without the prison, but governor Made Mangku Pastika said today that the facilities are over capacity and that the prison should be moved to Suwung, South Denpasar reports Tribun Bali

As for the current lapas, there are currently triple the amount of prisoners there should be in Kerobokan, the history of riots there ain’t too dandy, and the building is just too old, Pastika said, as quoted by Tribun.

According to Pastika, there are 30 available hectares in Suwung (though part of this land is apparently being used for a landfill).

We wonder if it’s any coincidence that Pastika wants to dump off the prisoners at the trash dump.
