Daring fusion and international fare smack in the middle of an Ubud rice paddy

COCONUTS HOT SPOT—Lots of Bali places offer rice field views, but not enough are located smack dab in the middle of a paddy like Cafe Pomegranate is.

The restaurant’s peaceful location offers 360 degree views and makes for an excellent spot to admire the rich hue of the sky when sunset paints the sky at dusk, in just the shade of the restaurant’s namesake, pomegranate.

The menu created by a Japanese brother duo can’t quite be pigeonholed into Western or Indonesian so we’ll have to put it under the international cuisine umbrella. The menu’s not an extensively long selection, but offers a quirky mix of wood-oven thin crust pizzas, oriental noodles, Indian curries, Japanese light meals, and even dips and desserts.

I’m usually wary of establishments with such wide spread options. But somehow I get the feel that instead of misguidedly trying to offer everything for everyone, they are simply listing down items they know how to do well.

I keep finding myself braving the tiny roads and the 700 meter walk into the paddy fields just to get a bite of their thin crust pizzas. What’s so special about them? The sambal matah sauce creates an flavor zing like no other! And I’ve yet to find another place bold enough to serve such a fusion.

They have also successfully tropicalized (yes we’re making this a word!) the Italian dessert panna cotta, replacing dairy with coconut milk and topping it off with a fresh mango sauce. And as for exotic comfort food, their banana cake and turmeric pudding are at the top of my list.

As tempting as it is to stay after dark and dreamily watch the fireflies, don’t forgot to bring your flashlight like I did, cause the rice paddy sure gets dark once the sun goes down.
