Authorities are still working on tracking down the prisoner who was discharged from Bali’s Kerobokan prison by mistake because of a name similarity with another prisoner who was set for release.
The man released too soon has been identified as CA, and had served just two of his nine year sentence for drugs, reports the Jakarta Post.
Denpasar Police have been on the hunt for CA since his accidental release last Friday, while a team from the Law and Human Rights Ministry’s directorate general for correction is also reportedly working on the case.
“They have yet to issue a report in the case, but we are working to help the prison catch him,” Denpasar Police Chief Anak Agung Made Sudana said of Kerobokan Prison, as quoted by the Jakarta Post.
The prison official who made the mistake is under investigation to determine if it was a real mistake, or it was an inside job, says Kerobokan prison warden Sudjonggo.
We don’t know if it was on purpose, but the warden says this: “There was negligence. The member of staff should have checked the details of the inmate to be released, including the photo that was attached in the document.”
The man who should have been released had finished his seven month prison term for theft, has a similar name with CA , and like CA, is from East Java.
Prison staff realized something went wrong when the man slated for release asked why he hadn’t been called to get out.
“We hope we can find him soon,” the warden says.
