Death toll from alleged methanol poisoning at Legian bar rises, police continue to investigate

Kuta Police are investigating Oscar’s Bar in Legian now for three deaths, allegedly from methanol poisoning resulting from alcoholic beverages served at the bar.

Reports of the death of a Russian tourist and her Manado partner surfaced earlier this week, while the death of a third person also from Mandado who apparently had also been drinking at Oscar’s has just been reported on today by Tribun Bali

Following the deaths of Manado man, Villy Kaudrow, 23, and Russian woman, Bulgakova Iulia, 28, Arthon Kevin Sondra, 20, died on Thursday in Denpasar’s Kasih Ibu Hospital, after he had fallen into a coma and was unconscious for a week, according to Tribun.

And now there’s reportedly a fourth victim in critical condition receiving treatment at Siloam Hospital, identified by Tribun as Maikel Mamangkey from Manado.

However, is not yet clear if in fact the three victims died from methanol poisoning via drinks served by Oscar’s.

Police originally detained the owner of Oscar’s, a bartender, and a waiter from the bar for questioning, but have since allowed them to go home and will only make arrests depending how the investigation goes says Kuta Police Chief Dedy Januarta.

In addition to having to perform an autopsy on the victims’ bodies, officers must also present a number of expert witnesses, according to Tribun

Beverage samples have been sent for examination in the lab to assess methanol levels—but police are still waiting for results, the police chief told Tribun.
