Bali NGO administers free vaccines against rabies for dogs, police come and make them stop

A NGO focused on animal issues in Bali was giving out free vaccines against rabies for dogs in Gianyar when police reportedly barged in and made them stop.

Residents had quickly gathered with dogs in tow, lining up at Pura Melanting, Suwat Village, Gianyar on Friday when word spread that Bali Animal Welfare Organization (BAWA) was in town, providing free vaccinations.

But not long after BAWA started the free vaccine administration, Gianyar Regency municipal police showed up to stop the community event, reports Tribun Bali

Head of Gianyar municipal police Gde Daging told Tribun that BAWA violated Bylaw no.5 1994 by not operating on a business license in Gianyar and that the organization did not have permission from Gianyar Animal Health Services and Bali Provincial Animal Husbandry.

BAWA was apparently slapped with a warning letter after this incident. Daging says getting permission from the relevant agencies is important so the handling of rabies can be properly coordinated.

Gusti Ngruah Bagus, BAWA officer manger, apparently confirmed with Tribun Bali that BAWA just wanted help animals in the community, especially dogs, by vaccinating against rabies. Bagus also apparently said that it’s true BAWA does not have the proper permits, but the organization is currently in the process of obtaining them.
