PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) III has reportedly put big money into a luxury marina project in Banyuwangi, East Java, apparently giving up on its Benoa, Bali marina ambitions.
After trying for three years and failing to get a permit to build in Benoa, the company has now invested Rp 200 billion in East Java, reports Kompas.
The marina, set on the small island of Banyuwangi’s Pantai BOOM, will be targeting luxury yachts and will be built in phases, Djarwo Surjanto, director of Pelindo III told KompasTravel on Saturday.
Pelindo III envisions the marina as being made up of three zones: a marina zone, residential zone, and recreation zone. And the company claims it will be environmentally friendly (“claims” being the operative word).
Surjanto says he hopes the marina will be fully operational by 2017.
Assistant Deputy of Natural Tourism Destination Development for the Ministry of Tourism, Azwir Malaon, told Kompas that this marina could be a catalyst for tourism development in Bayuwangi—since tourism is so often the goal of these sorts of projects.
