VIRAL: Careful learning ‘bahasa Indonesia’ with this language tutorial video

A seemingly boring video instructing foreigners how to speak basic Indonesia is going viral on Facebook. It’s already got more than 480,000 views as of Thursday morning—and it was only posted two days ago by user Hery A Santoso, though it’s not clear at this time when and where the video actually originated.

But it now appears to be going viral on Facebook amongst Indonesians and foreigners who can ALREADY speak Indonesian—because the video is not what it seems. Keep watching, keep watching, keep watching.

Bule Berbahasa Indonesia

The language tutorial starts out as innocuous as ever, and even sounds kind of boring as the woman drones on.

“Hari ini, kita mau belajar bahasa Indonesia,” the female language guru starts off, explaining that today we will learn some Indonesian.

The woman then does some brief greetings like “my name is” and “apa kabar” which are totally normal and in a perfect sounding accent, but things take a total shift when she geniusly says “barusan saya kentut,” with a total straight face and then gives the translation, “I need your assistance.” But she’s REALLY saying “I just farted.”

She then asks, “di mana saya bisa e-e?” and translates that to a more polite version, “where is the toilet,” when she literally said, “where can I take a shit?”
The video continues with more fun “translations”, such as a simple “kontol,” defined by her as “be happy.” This meaing’s not so far off for some folks though, as kontol means penis.

It then follows that she translates with hand gestures “kontol kecil” (small penis) to “little bit happy,” and “kontol besar” (big penis) to “always or very happy.”

We can totally see this video getting shared amongst loads of unsuspecting expats and tourists in Bali, taking the video so seriously and patting themselves on the backs for learning some basic Indonesian.

We sure hope there aren’t any international incidents in Bali sparked by some bule thoroughly offending and pissing off some locals when tyring to test out their new bahasa skills.

At the end of the hilarious video, she mentions that this is the end of lesson one—we sure hope that means there’s a lesson two!
