Bird smuggler stopped going out of Bali

Local police officers uncovered over 100 little pleci birds in a smuggling operation via Bali’s Gilimanuk port in Jembrana on Wednesday night.

“There were 110 birds to be smuggled out of Bali, to the destination of Situbondo, East Java. Since there is no license of quarantine, we have confiscated the 100 plus birds,”  I Nyoman Wirya Sucipta of Gilimanuk Police told Antara on Thursday.

Sucipta says the birds had been entrusted to the bus conductor from someone in Tabanan and were placed in two plastic boxes. Poor little things, birds were meant to fly free!

The birds will now be submitted to Agricultural Quarantine Class I Denpasar.

“They will most likely be released back into the wild,” he added.

Although loads of animal smugglers have been caught going either direction between Java and Bali, smugglers don’t seem to be deterred as we keep getting reports of these cases.
