And of course it all starts with the ahi poke itself, the classic Hawaiian appetizer made from marinating diced yellow fin tuna loins with onion, ginger, scallion, soy sauce, and sesame oil.

At this quirky Canggu-based Hawaiian style street kitchen, PokePoke Canggu, you can have your pick between the Original Hawaiian, Big Daddy Wasabi Mayo, Aloha Bali with sweet succulent mango dices, Thai Dynamite with sweet and spicy sauce, or the Ponzu and House Ginger poke bowl.

For vegetarians, skipping the ahi tuna doesn’t mean you need to skip all the fun here. ‘Poke’ in Hawaiian means ‘to slice or cut’, so the folks at PokePoke get creative with the things they slice and cut. There’s one where they poke sesame crusted tempeh (which is our personal favorite), another one called Edamame Hurricane (which predictably features the famous healthy green beans), and a funky one called Red Quinoa Hoke Poke.
Like most Canggu establishments, the place is more of a shack than a restaurant. But the clever arrangements of brightly colored high chairs and cheerful decor makes the space fun and cozy at the same time. There’s ukuleles, coconut tree-patterned wallpaper, hula dancers figurines, flowery leis, and even hula skirts you can try on to make the whole Hawaiian experience more authentic! And yes, that’s a swing seat in the middle of the room. You know, for those of you who need to gleefully express your joy after a praiseworthy meal, what else?
