Filmmakers want to put Engeline’s story on screen, Margriet’s lawyer ticked off

The story of the disappearance and brutal murder of an eight-year-old girl in Bali has captured countless people’s attention, even beyond Bali.

The story is so captivating, in fact, that producer Sonia Gandhi and director Panglima Indra want to bring it to the cinema.

Young Engeline was reported missing by her adoptive family in Sanur in May 2015, only to be found buried in the family’s backyard about three weeks later.

According to VIVA News, the film is being made under the title, Angeline: Inspiring of True Story Angeline and there are several famous stars cast for the film.

But not everyone wants Engeline’s story out there. Hotma Sitompul, the attorney for murder suspect and Engeline’s adoptive mother Margriet Megawe, has told the press he’s furious about the film.

“This should be sympathized, not contrived to make money,” Sitompul said on Thursday, as quoted by VIVA News.

“Who are the people who want to make this film? I want to know. Later, we’ll report them,” he added.

Not stopping there, Sitompul emphasized that the filmmaker must be on the move to exploit the story purely for profit.

However, since his angry statements, it has since been reported on that Gandhi and her colleagues were present in Margriet’s trial earlier today in order to get some research done for the film as well as meet the attorneys on the case to talk about licensing, according to Tribun Bali

Seems like they won’t get Sitompul’s support so easily.

Indra says the film team is additionally trying to coordinate with the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) and has already verbally asked permission from Engeline’s biological parents to make the film.
