Engeline trial: Prosecutor demands Agus get 12 years prison for guilty role in murder

While everyone’s been so busy worrying about whether a movie will be made about the tragic killing of eight-year-old girl Engeline in Bali, the trial for one of the two murder suspects is racing forward.

In a major development today in the case of defendant Agus Hamda May (the family’s former gardener), Denpasar prosecutor Ketut Maha Agung demanded Agus get 12 years for his guilty role in the little girl’s murder.

“For his actions, the defendant should account for his actions with a penalty of 12 years in prison, a subsidiary six-month jail term, and a fine of Rp 1 billion,” Agung said before the court on Tuesday, with Chief Judge Edward Harris Sinaga presiding, as quoted by Tribun Bali

But we’ll have to see if Judge Sinaga heeds the prosecutor’s recommendation and hands down a guilty sentence with 12 years prison when it’s all said and done.

Agung explained that the trial has demonstrated Agus to be convincingly guilty in allowing violence causing Engeline’s death and hiding her body. But he added that Agus would be shown some mercy because he has cooperated and behaved himself, shown remorse, and is still young.

However, we’re not sure things will be as merciful for Margriet, Engeline’s adoptive mother, who is the other suspect in the murder case.
