And so it begins: Trial opens for Australian accused of assaulting Sky Garden club manager

The trial has just begun for the Australian man who allegedly assaulted a manager of the popular Kuta nightclub, Sky Garden.

Scott Dobson was greeted on Wednesday at Denpasar District Court with people chanting “deportasi” (deportation), Lauren Farror of AAP reports.

The 53-year-old is accused of attacking Canadian Kenneth Wickes on Sept. 27, 2013, allegedly kicking him and stomping on his chest after Dobson and his friends refused to pay for their drinks from that night.

“Because of what the defendant and his friends did, the victim (Wickes) suffered bruising to his right eyelid, a bruise on upper lips and broken teeth,” prosecutor Gusti Ayu Fitria told the court, as quoted by AAP.

Wickes was present at the trial’s first day and told AAP that it was something of his duty to attend court: “I’m just wanting to make an appearance to show I’m here and I’m serious about the charge and following up on it.”

The Australian, who is currently being held at Kerobokan Prison, could get nine years behind bars if convicted. He had apparently been on police’s wanted list for three years before he was arrested in December 2015—his friends reportedly still remain wanted in Bali.
