Chinese tourist injured chasing phone thief on Sunset Road, Kuta

A Chinese tourist was not having it on Saturday afternoon when a man snatched her phone.

Zhao Zhiping, 24, had to be rushed to the hospital after getting injured when chasing a thief, identified in reports as Karangasem man Komang Toni, 26, across Sunset Road.

The victim had been asking the perp about directions when he stole her phone.

“It happened when the victim had her mobile phone out, with the intent of looking up something on Google Maps. When the perp saw the phone, he directly grabbed it,” Kuta Police Chief Wayan Semara said on Sunday, as quoted by Okezone

Toni apparently tried to flee by motorbike going eastward, but Zhiping wasn’t far behind. When Toni was stopped by a red flight, Zhiping immediately crashed into him.

“As a result of pursuing the perpetrator, the victim is currently undergoing treatment at BIMC Hospital for the wounds on her right and left hands and forehead. We instantly caught the perp on the spot,” Semara said.

Evidence taken at the scene include the motorbike driven by Toni and an iPhone 6, which was given back to Zhiping—thankfully, after all that!

Police say they are still investigating and are examining whether or not this is Toni’s first time running off with stuff that’s not his.
