VIDEO: Alleged bag thief in Padang Padang violently beaten, ‘street justice’ style

Warning: Video below contains violence.

“Street justice” in Indonesia is a scary thing to watch.

A video first posted to Facebook on March 14 then later shared on YouTube, reminds us of the dark side of Bali, that the island’s not all sunshine, smiles, and cocktails by the beach.

The video shows angry local residents descending upon an alleged bag snatcher as he lies curled up in the street, seriously beating him up, possibly to death.

The OP wrote in the caption of his video that he had been in Padang Padang, Uluwatu when a French girl started crying in the street, saying that her handbag had been stolen by two young men on a scooter. He said that they passed by the same road and eventually locals were able to catch them. Police arrive at the end of the video to carry the alleged thieves away, limp bodies and all, after they were beaten.

“The video shows what happen if you steal in Bali. If you want you can share the video so people will think twice before stealing. And women please be careful if you are alone and bringing handbag,” the OP concluded.

Sure, while you could say “that’s just the way it is here” or “that’s what happens to thieves,” but that doesn’t mean it’s right. Do these misguided kids really deserve to die or be brought within an inch of their lives over a stolen bag?
