Snake handler fatally bitten by king cobra in West Bali

A snake handler from Jembrana, West Bali has succumbed to a fatal cobra bite, reports say.

His death comes right after dangdut singer Irma Bule’s untimely death in West Java on April 3. The singer died when a king cobra she was using as a performance prop bit her on stage.

Now a Balinese man has also died from the deadly venom of a king cobra. I Putu Edi Darmawan was apparently well known locally in Pekutatan, Jembrana for being experienced with catching and charming snakes.

The incident happened when Darmawan was out looking for snakes to catch with British and Taiwanese tourists, Merdeka reports. After about an hour of searching through bushes, the group came across a king cobra nesting under a bamboo tree. Trying to take the snake, Darmawan reportedly grabbed its tail, which turned out to be a grave miscalculation as the snake retaliated and bit his pinkie finger.

Darmawan’s guests rushed him to the health center in Pekutatan, where he was directly referred to Negara Hospital for intensive treatment.

However, even after three hours of receiving treatment at the hospital, Darmawan reportedly died around 6 pm. The poison from the snake bite is believed to have spread throughout his body too quickly, rendering him beyond the point of no return.
