Bali Deputy Governor insists on immediate Kerobokan Prison relocation to Suwung landfill area after prison brawl

Following a clash at Kerobokan Prison early on Friday morning, Deputy Governor of Bali Ketut Sudikerta is urging that Kerobokan’s relocation plan be immediately initiated.

“It’s necessary that Bali is safe and comfortable. Moreover, Bali has become a tourist destination that’s very vulnerable to security issues,” Sudikerta said on Friday, as quoted by Tribun Bali

Sudikerta says he supports Governor Made Mangku Pastika’s controversial plan to move Bali’s biggest prison to Suwung, Denpasar—which happens to also home a giant landfill.

The deputy governor added that the Province is ready to facilitate the transfer if plans are followed through and this really should happen to reduce the frequent friction—totally a reference to the violent brawl between rival gangs at LP Kerobokan in December 2015

But let’s see if Sudikerta and his boss Pastika can actually swing it. Yes, something’s gotta give as the prison is way overcrowded at the moment and its easy, convenient location is believed to facilitate drug trade, but there is kind of a whole human rights issue if they were to move the prison to such a “stinky” environment

This isn’t the first we’ve heard of people want to relocate Bali’s most notorious prison out of it’s centralized tourist area location. Other than suggestions to move to Suwung, there have also been proposals to move the facility to Klungkung (Nusa Penida) or Karangasem
