‘Amazing Race’ contestants get snakes lei’d on them at Tanah Lot

The latest episode of the hit American TV reality show “The Amazing Race” featured Americans frantically wrapping pythons around their necks at Tanah Lot.

Or the “snake temple” as the TV show called it, lol. Yes, Tanah Lot is known for its highly venomous yet non-confrontational sea snakes, but there aren’t just pythons slithering around as this TV show may have you believe—for those in the show’s audience who have never been to Bali. Good thing the show’s producers decided to use the non-venomous pythons instead of the temple’s real resident reptile.

In general, the whole framing of the episode was super exotifying of the island, with the teaser even introducing the episode’s preview like so:  “Imagine, you’re in a foreign country, with the MOST exotic customs on Earth.” But, hey, we’re not hating!

Challenges for the teams included delivering traditional Balinese offerings to Pura Enjng Galuh and then Tanah Lot, harvesting salt with seawater, making and selling bakso, and flying some big kites.

Here’s a recap of the episode, if you’re so inclined:
