A flight from Denpasar to Malang was cancelled yesterday because of volcanic ash spewed from Mt. Bromo, which is located in East Java’s Tengger Caldera.
The volcano’s ash was spit westwards, towards the East Java city Malang, resulting in the closure of Abdul Rachman Saleh Airport.
Sherly Yunita, a spokesperson from airport authority PT Angkasa Pura I Ngurah Rai, said that the Malang Wings Air flight was the only Ngurah Rai service cancelled on Monday due to the ash.
Thankfully the cancelled flight’s 72 passengers were reportedly compensated. “Wings Air has refunded ticket fees to all passengers,” Yunita told Antara Bali.
This isn’t the first time in recent years that passengers have been stranded in Bali thanks to volcanic ash. East Java’s Gunung Raung ash spewing led to the cancellation of scores of flights out of Bali in late 2015.
