This year’s Bali Marathon to draw out rival Kenyan star athletes

The upcoming Bali International Marathon will see thousands of runners racing through Gianyar on August 28, but the winner of the full marathon category will likely come down to one juicy rivalry.

“As rivals, two Kenyans, namely Kennedy Kippro Lilan and Mbogo Elijah Mwaniki have already been competing during the last two years as fierce competitors in the full marathon,” event organizer and President Director of BII Maybank Taswin Zakaria said in Jakarta on Wednesday, as quoted by Republika

Lilan has been the presiding king of the Bali Marathon and was the three-time winner of the race from 2012 to 2015. He also earned the event’s record for fastest time in 2012, finishing the 42K race in 2 hours 16 minutes 54 seconds.

But Mbogo literally gave Lilan a run for his money last year, beating his rival to the finish line by just three seconds.

Guess we’ll have to see who takes the Rp 178 juta prize this year—runner up gets a measly Rp 128 million!

The Bali Marathon is in its fifth year with more than seven thousand participants competing from 43 countries.
