Crowdfunding page set up for family of murdered Bali policeman via local charity, Solemen

A fundraising page has been set up to help support the family of I Wayan Sudarsa, the Bali policeman found brutally murdered on Kuta Beach early on Wednesday morning.

The 53-year-old traffic unit officer is survived by a widow and two children, according to the Generosity.com page, which aims to provide financial support to them for living and educational costs, as well as for Bali-Hindu ceremonies.

“On an island where we are very quick to launch humanitarian funding campaigns for hapless tourists in hospital who come to the Island, get drunk and fall off a motorcycle or to fund an operation for a wounded stray dog, we desire to step up and set up a special fund to aid the family of the fallen policeman,” the page’s description reads.

Furthermore, donating does not necessarily mean judging the innocence or guilt of the two foreigners named as suspects in the case.

To add for transparency, managing the fundraiser will be well-known local charity, Solemen Indonesia and 100 percent of the funds raised will go to supporting Sudarsa’s wife and children, according to the page.

Solemen, a non-profit which aims to help Bali’s disadvantaged, has apparently had a history of contact with Sudarsa who “had taken an active and concerned role in helping the community, including an intervention for a homeless Irish man found wandering the streets of Kuta in a disoriented condition.”

And further anticipating naysayers who will go down the slippery slope of police corruption or an “us vs them” thing, the page concludes:

“This is not about race or corruption. We wish to keep this simple and clean: make it about aiding a Balinese family that has suffered an unspeakable loss and taking a tragic turn of events and discovering a commonality of interest by aiding the family of a fallen Balinese policeman.”

As of writing time in the first eight hours of the fundraiser’s launch, just under $500 has been raised of the $20k goal.
