Australian Sara Connor allegedly wanted to burn the evidence of dead policeman

Sara Connor, the Australian woman involved in the bloody incident that lead to a Bali police officer’s death, allegedly had the idea to burn the evidence of the violent encounter last week.

Police say Connor wanted to burn officer I Wayan Sudarsa’s wallet and mobile phone, along with her and her boyfriend’s bloody clothes.

Connor and British boyfriend David Taylor were arrested as suspects after Sudarsa’s body was found on the beach in the early hours of August 17. Connor’s ATM card and driver’s license were found at the scene of the crime.

Taylor, a DJ, has admitted to brutally bashing the policeman over the head with a bottle in a state of drunken rage, but not to killing him, his lawyer said on Tuesday. But this was only after the couple initially denied any involvement and gave conflicting accounts of the night’s events.

The altercation apparently started when Taylor and Connor were looking for Connor’s missing bag on the beach and confronted Sudarsa.

Police said Taylor accused Sudarsa of being a “fake cop” and stealing Connor’s bag.

Taylor “searched the victim, accused him of being a thief, and called him a fake cop even though he was wearing a uniform,” Denpasar Police Chief Had Purnomo said, as quoted by the News Corp Australia Network

The Brit struck Sudarsa with the beer bottle until it broke and also attacked him with a pair of binoculars and a mobile phone, according to Purnomo.

“David was hitting violently, in a rage, with the bottle,” Purnomo said.

Connor, mother of two, however, says she did not attack Sudarsa and only tried to get in between the two men.

But Purnomo apparently doesn’t buy it—he reportedly said on Tuesday that he suspects she took part in the killing.

The day after Sudarsa’s body was found on the beach, the couple checked out of their hotel and burned their clothes, Purnomo said.

If found guilty of murder, the couple could get up to 15 years behind bars.
