VIDEO: Penjor, Bali’s ‘Christmas tree’ explained, ahead of Galungan holiday

In the next week, you’ll see Bali go through a transformation as the island gears up for the Galungan holiday.

Penjor, those long bamboo poles decorated with coconut leaves that look so characteristically Bali will be lining the streets. They’ll be placed in front of homes and businesses for Galungan, which falls on September 7 this year, through Kuningan on September 17.

But what do penjor signify and what’s the holiday all about?

A compact video posted by Bali Go Live succinctly explains the process of penjor-making, what each element represents, and how it all comes together for this twice-yearly Balinese holiday that celebrates the triumph of good over evil—certainly something worth celebrating!
