UPDATE Austrian woman among two people killed by Indonesia ferry blast
There are breaking reports of a Gili fast boat exploding, leaving some foreign tourists injured.
The Gili Cat II, which had 35 foreign tourists and crew aboard, exploded when heading from Bali to Gili Trawangan on Thursday at around 9:35 am, according to local reports.
The boat was just 200 meters out from the Bali port of Padang Bai when it suddenly exploded.
“We do not know yet why it exploded,” Gili Cat II crew member Nyoman Supartika told Tribun Bali.
The latest report by Tribun reveals that three people were injured on the boat, the worst being a woman, believed to be from Italy, whose legs were allegedly hit by the boat’s propeller.
Those injured were rushed to the hospital in Klungkung.
However, reports from Bali Berkarya alternatively say that one of the injured boat passengers died on the way to the hospital and 14 are suffering from burn wounds.
This is a developing story and we will post updates to our site as details of the incident become more clear.
With questionable safety standards and regulations, there seem to have been a number of fast boat incidents in recent years, one of the most notable being in Nov. 2014, when passengers were abandoned on a sinking ship by their hapless crew.
