Veg out, dude: The Bali Vegan Festival is setting down roots in Ubud from Oct. 7-9

Whether you’re a long-term vegan or a fully fledged carnivore conflicted by your love for animals, the second annual Bali Vegan Festival invites you to eat, drink and be conscious from Oct. 7-9 in Ubud.

Open to all vegans and vegan-curious, this year’s bigger and better event is set to take place over two venues: the Paradiso cultural center – complete with a raw vegan bar, performance space, stalls and a movie theatre – and the nearby breezy gardens of Taksu Spa, where a number of workshops and cooking classes will take place.

The festival aims to “inspire, educate and enlighten” while it celebrates all things cruelty free, which, we’re happy to say, includes ice cream (the vegan kind, of course!).

Entry to festival is free, as are some of the talks and workshops, while other classes and entertainment will be priced individually. All the wholesome fun of the fare kicks off at 8am on Friday Oct. 7 with a free yoga class at Paradiso, which will be repeated every morning, supplemented by free Qi Gong meditation from master Khien Phuc on Friday and Saturday.

After that you can take your pick of masterclasses from vegan chefs, healers, musicians, environmentalists and yoga teachers, or just mingle with fellow vegan lifestyle enthusiasts as you tour the stalls and prop up the buffet.

Highlights of this year’s program include author, expert and activist Dr. Susianto Tseng; James Aspey, who undertook a 356-day vow of silence to raise awareness for animal suffering; and Chair of the International Vegetarian Union and Head of Indonesia Vegetarian Society Judit Németh-Pach.

Those with little people in tow can lose them in a dedicated arts & crafts zone, as well as movie screenings, children’s yoga and circus workshops – what parent can honestly say they’ve never fantasized about sending their kids away to the circus?

Those without little people or with no regard for bedtimes can alternately get down every night to fresh and funky sounds from some of Bali’s best DJs and musicians, including Aray Daulay and DJ Cozi Till.

Who knows, you might even manage to get legless while you go eggless! You’re welcome.
