Crowdfunding page set up for local community after Nusa Lembongan-Ceningan bridge collapse

A crowdfunding page has been set up to help raise money for the victims, families, and communities of Nusa Lembongan and Ceningan following the shocking collapse of the iconic “Yellow Bridge” connecting the two islands.

Over $7,000 has been raised as of Monday evening on the “Yellow Bridge Collapse Campaign” GoFundMe page following the suspension bridge incident that killed eight and injured at least 30 more on Sunday.

Locals had been on their way back from praying at a temple on Nusa Ceningan for the religious holiday Nyepi Laut, where the sea around the islands is totally silent from activity—no boats come in or out.

“Anyone who has been blessed with the opportunity to visit this beautiful part of Indonesia will know how devastating a tragedy of this nature is and how far reaching it will be on an island community,” reads the fundraiser page’s description.

“Both Nusa Lembongan & Nusa Ceningan are heavily reliant on the tourism industry and we hope this is a way we can all give back a little to this island paradise.

“Any donation, no matter how big or small, will be gratefully recieved (sic) by the people of Lembongan / Cenigan (sic) and will  show our support to these two island communities at this very sad time.”

Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this post put the death count from the tragedy at nine, as originally reported by Reuters. However, following the commotion, village officials have clarified the amount of fatalities from the horrifying bridge collapse as eight.
