Blast rattles Kuta Square, electrical box apparent culprit

A blast shook the popular Bali shopping area of Kuta Square on Tuesday morning sending smoke into the air and tourists scattering.

The explosion allegedly originated from an electrical box.

Firefighters were quick to respond and shortly arrived at the scene, according to local reports.

The state electricity company (PLN) has turned off the power supply around Kuta Square, in anticipation of the first blast triggering a secondary explosion or fire, police said.

Kuta Police Chief Comr. I Wayan Sumara confirmed the blast and power cutoff.

“Electricity has been turned off by PLN,” Okezone quoted Sumara as saying.

Meanwhile, pictures of a smoky Kuta Square have been spreading like wildfire on social media, along with videos, apparently showing the exploding electrical box.
