16-year-old local arrested for allegedly stealing Kuta tourist’s iPhone, but only after getting a bashing from security

A Bali teen has been arrested for allegedly stealing a tourist’s iPhone 6 in Kuta. But before he was taken into police custody, Kiki Irfan apparently got a beating from security guards at the scene.

The teen faced reporters today at a press conference in Kuta and was made to pose with the phone that he allegedly stole.

Kuta police chief Wayan Sumara outlined the alleged crime, explaining that at 3:30 am in Poppies 1 on Sunday morning, a Perth teen, Limara Deana Holmes, 17, was walking with a friend after leaving Skygarden.

Irfan and another man rode up on a scooter and snatched Holmes’ phone, the police chief added.

“The victim was screaming ‘help me, my phone is stolen’,” Sumara said, as quoted by the News Corp Australia network.

Hearing the girl’s screams, security guards from a hotel stepped in, apparently delivering some Indonesian street justice to Irfan, before police arrived and arrested him.

Police are still on the hunt for Irfan’s partner in crime.

Irfan is married and has a child so he’ll be treated as an adult under Indonesian law—he’s facing charges that carry a max five-year prison sentence.

Sumara said Irfan and his accomplice were preying on westerners in Kuta, seizing the opportunity brought on by “schoolies week,” where Kuta is flooded by Australian teens. Though it’s unclear if Holmes was a schoolie or not.

Sumara said he wanted to leave schoolies with some important advice: “When you are drunk, remember where is the police post and where is your hotel.”
