Kofi Annan to speak at Bali Democracy Forum

The annual Bali Democracy Forum has some big names poised to speak at this year’s conference, among them, former United Nations secretary general, Ghanaian diplomat, Kofi Annan

The ninth Bali Democracy Forum will run December 8 to 9 in Nusa Dua and reportedly will be attended by representatives from at least 60 countries.

The hot topic on the table at this year’s forum will relate to religion: “Religion, Democracy, and Pluralism.”

“The them is very appropriate to recent circumstances occurring now in Indonesia, even though the theme was set back in March. I think there will be a heated discussion at the BDF meeting this year,” said Esti Andayani, director general of Information and Public Diplomacy for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as quoted by VIVA News

In addition to holding various panel discussions related to the conference’s theme, BDF participants will also conduct a site visit to an Islamic boarding school in Tabanan, Bali.

“It’s something unique, because Bali, as a majority Hindu province, has such a boarding school. Although it’s Muslim, members still follow Balinese culture, such as dancing, while using the headscarf,” Andayani said
