Swiss student allegedly gang raped on Nusa Penida, Bali

Three men accused of gang raping a Swiss student in Nusa Penida in the early hours of Feb. 10, have been arrested and declared suspects.

Nusa Penida is a small island in Bali’s Klunkung regency, southeast of the mainland.

Klunkung Police Spokesman Insp. I Nyoman Sarjana confirmed the alleged rape case to the press. According to Sarjana, the case is still being investigated and is being handled by Nusa Penida Police.

The three men are currently in police custody for questioning, according to local reports.

“All three were identified as suspects on Saturday afternoon,” said Nusa Penida Police Chief Commissioner I Ketut Suastika said on Saturday, as quoted by Tribun Bali

The three, along with two other friends of theirs, apparently met the 21-year-old Swiss student and her friend, also a Swiss tourist, in Batununggul, Nusa Penida. After getting drunk and drinking a mix of beer and arak together, the three perps allegedly invited the student up to a room, while her friend was invited outside by one of the guys in the group. Once upstairs, the three men allegedly took turns forcing themselves upon the young woman, who tried, but unsuccessfully, resisted.

The victim and her friend reported the alleged rape to Nusa Penida Police the next day.

Under Indonesian criminal law, the three suspects could be facing up to 12 years in prison for the alleged rape.
