Overbooked at the ‘Hotel Kerobokan’

Apparently way too many people in Bali got the memo that orange is the new black.

Bali’s infamous Kerobokan Prison is over capacity by an alarming amount, according to Made Bandra, the prison’s acting head.

There are more than double the amount of prisoners than Kerobokan is meant to handle. That’s a lot of people in that not so big facility.

Supposedly, the prison can only accommodate about 400 inmates, but at the moment, more than 800 inmates are locked up. Maybe that’s why Bali’s real estate agents keep trying to show us economical rentals that look too cheap to be true on prison adjacent street Jl. Intan Permai and the surrounding area. Darn, we knew that 3br villa with the pool shouldn’t be priced under Rp 100 juta.

Incarcerating felons for drug cases along with ordinary criminal cases is what is likely causing the overcrowding, believes Bandra. He questions if the prison would still be packed if drug cases were not put in the criminal category. Sure, drug dealers could check in to Kerobokan, but not drug users. See the original report by Tribun Bali here.

Emptying out some of these drug cases would leave more room for those who make the big leagues and allegedly belong in Hotel Kerobokan’s penthouse suite, like Bali’s alleged St. Regis suitcase murderers, Heather Mack and boyfriend Tommy Schaefer.
