An artist literally buried himself using a crane to protest Benoa Bay’s reclamation

Using a legit crane, one artist buried himself deep in sand this Sunday to protest Bali’s biggest political issue at the moment, the reclamation of Benoa Bay.

The protest was a symbolic gesture for the “Tolak Reklamasi” movement, that is standing up against investors and the government who plan to fill in a new island for tourism in Benoa Bay, reported Tribun Bali

Artist Made Bayak’s visual arts burial demonstration was a part of a larger art event on Sunday at at Padang-Galak Beach that involved about 250 artists. Bayak and his cohort hope the government will cancel plans for reclamation immediately. Former Indonesian president SBY was criticized for taking Benoa Bay off a protected land list that opened it up for reclamation. Now that Indonesia’s new president Jokowi is stepping up today, we’ll have to see how he handles the issue and if that island will actually be built to so many locals’ dismay.
