Food Fight: Violence erupts over buffet line at Bali Golkar party meeting

It’s been non-stop bickering since the Golkar party even started talking about whether it would have its National Congress in Bali this past weekend, but last night the pointed words were escalated into an alleged full on brawl that resulted into one man being beat, sustaining serious head injuries.

Was it over who would be the party’s new leader or lingering controversy over Jokowi’s election as Indonesia’s new president? Nope. While those factors probably heightened the tension, the biggest quarrel from the party was allegedly because one conference goer’s eyes were bigger than his stomach—he apparently took to much from the buffet line, Kompas reports. This altercation even reportedly lead to broken plates, glass and a bigger quarrel among conference attendees.

The poor man who stacked up his plate was reportedly beat up last night in front of the General Assembly. Kompas believes the beating was triggered because the victim was reprimanded when he took too much food, but its unclear if that’s what actually started the larger “riot” last night. The man was allegedly beaten until he dropped to the ground and was escorted out. Police personnel were eventually able to secure the victim and calm the situation. Leaving behind a memorable statement of the night, his blood was reportedly left behind where he took the hits, according to Kompas.

The Golkar party conference, which kicked off yesterday, is scheduled to last until Thursday in Nusa Dua. The meeting is over who the party’s next chairman will be, and arguments over selecting incumbent chairman Aburizal Bakrie have been heated, so this ‘food fight’ may just be the beginning of a rough start for Golkar’s stay in Bali.
