Even though Bali Nine death row inmate Andrew Chan has not received a formal letter rejecting his bid for clemency from President Joko Widodo like fellow Bali Niner Myuran Sukumaran, reports are saying that the convict is to be executed.
The West Australian is reporting that Indonesia’s attorney general has confirmed that both Sukumaran and Chan are on Indonesia’s 2015 executions list and that they are up for execution regardless of whether Chan has received such rejection letter yet.
The pair hoped for clemency and submitted their plea to former president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, but never heard back before his presidency ended, leaving their fates in the hands of Jokowi.
There’s been a lot of questions over what will happen under the new President as he is seen as more progressive but last month he came off as a hardliner when he made comments that he would be “firm” about using capital punishment for drug traffickers.
Sukumaran and Chan were handed the death penalty in 2006 for a 2005 smuggling attempt to bring 8.3 kilograms of heroin out of Bali.
