The boyfriend in Kerobokan Prison’s most controversial couple of the Bali suitcase murder reportedly testified that he killed his girlfriend’s mother after she threatened him.
Tommy Schaefer, 21, said from the stand in Indonesian court on Thursday that his girlfriend’s mother, Chicago socialite Sheila von Wiese-Mack threatened to kill his unborn baby and choked him for around 30 seconds, reports the Associated Press.
Schaefer reportedly claims he took out von Wiese-Mack in self defense.
Schaefer and girlfriend Heather Mack, 19, first made waves in Bali when they were arrested in August 2014 for allegedly killing von Wiese-Mack at the posh St. Regis resort and stuffing her body into a suitcase, then abandoning it.
The couple is being tried separately and is charged with premeditated murder, which carries the maximum penalty of death.
According to AP’s report, Schaefer testified that von Wiese-Mack didn’t approve of his relationship with her daughter. He reportedly said he and his girlfriend discussed how to tell von Wiese-Mack about the pregnancy. Schaefer claimed Mack asked him to bring a metal fruit bowl, that he hid under his shirt as a “precaution.” Which makes so much sense they were taking on a 62 year old lady and all.
When a judge asked him why he hid the bowl, Schaefer reportedly said he didn’t know if he would have to defend himself, but when he got to their St. Regis suite, Mack was crying, her mother was screaming, and things escalated quickly, with von Wiese-Mack telling them to get an abortion and von Wiese-Mack allegedly choking him.
“She (von Wiese-Mack) was angry at me when she knew that Heather was pregnant,” Schaefer said during his testimony, as quoted by AP.
“I was angry, I took the fruit bowl and hit her,” Schaefer said, crying.
